Vacancy for Co-Opted Governor

Would you like to be involved in the running of our school? Why not consider applying to join our governing body as a co-opted member?

We are especially keen to receive applications from people with experience outside of education.

What do school governors do?

Governors work with the Headteacher and school staff to lead our school and have a vital role to play in making sure every child gets the best possible education. Our role is to

  • Ensure our school has a clear ethos and vision for the future
  • Hold the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
  • Oversee the school budget and make sure its money is well spent.

Governors work as a team, making decisions together and sharing responsibilities for the decisions they make. Each Governor brings a different experience and skill to the role.

What type of people are we looking for?

We need to make sure we have a good mix of skills, aptitudes and experience on our governing body so that we can work together as an effective team. For this particular role we are interested in someone with financial data experience.

We are keen to maintain the diversity of our governing board and so would particularly welcome BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) and LGBT applicants we would also welcome applications from representatives of any faith.

It’s also important that you will be able to commit to attending 6 full governing body meetings each term (usually held at 6.30pm on a Monday for 2 hours) and making occasional visits to the school during the school day. Full training will be available, and you will always act as part of a team. In addition, you may wish to be involved in the Finance or Standards Committees. No specific qualifications are required, just a commitment to volunteer and help support the running of the school so that the children have the best possible educational experience.

Your Commitment

If you become a governor you will be taking on the following commitments to help make sure the school is well managed, and provides the best possible standard of education for the children that attend our school;

  • Share the responsibilities of the governing body as summarised above.
  • Attend and participate in governors’ meetings on a regular basis
  • Attend appropriate training (daytime and evening courses available)
  • Sign up to our Code of Conduct and behave appropriately in your role as governor.
