The whole school community at Air Balloon Hill Primary have a responsibility to safeguard the children and young people who attend our school.
We ensure all staff have successfully completed necessary clearances to enable them to work with children. As well as all staff receiving safeguarding training we have a specifically trained and nominated Designated Safeguarding Lead and Safeguarding Team.
We have been talking to the children about ‘being safe’ during our first SKR week of the year. A copy of the letter from Mrs Knight can be found here: Parent letter SKR Week Being Safe and information about the NSPCC PANTS campaign can be found below
The NSPCC’s ‘PANTS’ campaign has been supporting and encouraging parents and schools to talk to primary aged children about saying safe. The PANTS tools and resources give adults clear and simple ways to open these conversations in a clear and child friendly way. This helps children to understand that their body belongs to them and that they should tell someone they trust if anything makes them feel upset or worried.
At Air Balloon, we fully support and deliver the PANTS message to our children. Click here for a Parents’ Guide We also recommend watching the ‘The Pantosaurus Song’ with younger children, which can be accessed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lL07JOGU5o
What does the Prevent Duty mean for schools?
The Prevent Duty is about ensuring that appropriate support is available for individuals who may demonstrate vulnerabilities to radicalisation.
All schools have a duty to safeguard children from radicalisation and extremism. This means that we have a responsibility to protect children from extremist and violent views in the same way that we protect them from any other forms of harm.
Mrs Knight is our DSL and Prevent Lead. She can be contacted via the school office on 0117 9030077 or by emailing safeguarding@abhps.com.
How do we approach this with our pupils?
At Air Balloon Hill Primary School, we build pupils’ resilience to radicalisation by promoting Fundamental British Values and enabling pupils to challenge extremist views. It is important to emphasise that the Prevent Duty is not intended to stop pupils debating controversial issues. On the contrary, school provides a safe space in which children and staff can understand the risks associated with terrorism and develop the knowledge and skills to be able to challenge extremist arguments.
It is important that all children feel safe in school and that they are able to express tolerance towards all cultures and religions, even when personal views may be different. At Air Balloon, we approach this in a number of different ways.
Staff at Air Balloon have completed the government’s Prevent training on how to identify radicalisation and extremism. We recognise that we play a vital role in keeping children safe from harm, including from the risks of extremism and radicalisation, and in promoting the welfare of children in our care.
